Remembering those we have lost

  • 𝑲𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒏 𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒖 (𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟐-𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎)

    Kevin had graduated from Penn State University, and went on to live in Philadelphia to pursue his dreams, where he was later placed on an antidepressant for some anxiety that he was experiencing.

    Kevin described the beginning of taking Lexapro as an LSD trip, which then went downhill afterwards.

    Within two weeks of using the drug, he began to experience PSSD symptoms, prompting him to discontinue Lexapro. These side effects persisted for the remaining 9 months of his life.

    Kevin left his suicide note in a Philadelphia Newspaper under the following headline ‘Despair Takes a Young Man’s Life’.

    Kevin declared that he absolutely loved his life, but PSSD became too unbearable for him.

  • 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑲𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 (𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟖-𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗)

    Mary was a high school student athlete on her way to pursue the dream of studying Neuroscience at University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. She didn’t let PSSD stop her from other activities such as singing, another hobby she loved. Eventually, the symptoms of PSSD became too overbearing for her.

    Before her death, Mary cried out for help in the 2018 FDA Citizen Petition for PSSD. Due to their failure to respond, it cost Mary her life.

  • 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒇𝒌𝒐𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓 (𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟔-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎)

    David was a student studying Psychology who was highly motivated and intelligent. He had just moved out on his own to start his life.

    David had some struggles with OCD, which prompted him to seek treatment. He was prescribed Zoloft after a quick visit to the psychiatrist. Over a period of just a couple weeks, David experienced intense side effects. He was then given an antipsychotic, which made everything worse. After discontinuing the drugs 5 months later, David never recovered. He attempted various methods to improve his situation, all in vain. He couldn't watch TV, play games, or read. He also experienced a persistent loss of libido and sexual problems.

    David described himself as feeling like a zombie.

    David desired to live, but not the life he had with PSSD. He characterized this existence as an ongoing torture, day in and day out. David took his life.

  • 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒆 (𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟗-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎)

    Philipp was volunteering with PSSD Germany due to suffering from the condition himself. He did everything in his power to help raise the alarm of PSSD.

    Philipp was described as hardworking and dedicated. He was passionate about informed consent and finding resources to help those suffering with PSSD.

    Eventually, his suffering became too much. PSSD Germany announced the passing of Philipp Wilde shortly after his death.

  • 𝑱𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒏 𝑹𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒍𝒆 (𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏)

    Jordan was on antidepressants for anxiety and depression. He had decided that it was time to come off the drugs due to arising side effects such as genital numbness. His doctor insisted he stays on the drugs, which created further side effects before he came off.

    A few months after stopping, Jordan became suicidal and went to a hospital where he described the symptoms of genital numbness and cognitive disturbances. The Psychiatrist told him that these symptoms were all in his head, and proceeded to prescribe more antidepressants.

    For the remainder of his life, Jordan insisted that he really wanted to get better for his family, but the symptoms of PSSD were not easing up. He described his experience as “Chemically castrated and Chemically Lobotomized”.

    While Jordan wanted to live and be there for his family, the medical system failed him and continued to gaslight his experience of suffering with PSSD.

  • 𝑨𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒆 (𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟖-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐)

    Arielle was a Vet Tech from Ohio who absolutely loved caring for and learning about animals.

    Arielle stayed in contact with various sufferers of PSSD online, where she was desperately looking for hope. She was given support by many in her life, including those with PSSD. Due to her symptoms, she described the inability to feel love or connection for her own baby which had eventually pushed her over the edge.

    Arielle leaves behind her baby, family, and friends.

  • 𝑱𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒚 (𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟕-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑)

    Jason had drug-induced psychosis and went to a hospital to seek treatment. He was ripped off Paxil after being on the drug for 20 years. He experienced a lot of symptoms, so then he was injected with Invega.

    He developed PSSD after being off the drugs and began seeking support in online PSSD communities. He suffered for over a year until he had enough and decided to take his life.

    Jason was found in a Pennsylvania river, and shortly after, his mother confirmed his death via social media.

    As described by PSSD sufferers, Jason was kind and selfless. He was always there for those going through the same thing in online support groups.
